Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

I was arrested for retail theft October 2008. I was 17 years old. This is the first time I have been arrested and i have not since. I want to apply to the Certified Nursing Assisant and then eventually the Nursing Program within the next 2 years, however they have backround checks. My court date is September 3rd and if i get convicted I will not be accepted into the program. Is there anyway to not be convicted and just ask for supervison of some sort? If i explain my situation of my planned future career will that affect the courts final decision?

Thank You.

You need to hire counsel to negotiate this for you. It is too importnat to try and do on your own and the prosecutor is more likelyu to negotiate with counsel. Good luck.

Even at your age,or perhaps especially at your age, it is crucial that you hire the very best criminal defense lawyer you can afford. The negative consequences of handling this situation poorly far outweigh any benefit that you might seem to get from doing this on your own. An attorney can provide a professional opinion as to whether the state can prove the charge against you. If so, then the attorney can deal with the state's attorney much more effectively than an individual defendant can in most cases. Please do yourself a huge favor and consult with an attorney as soon as you can.
