Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

Attempted retail theft

I was recently at a BB store, and was accused of theft. While in the store I returned a laptop and recieved a refund. I then picked up a product and while deciding if I wanted it recieved a call that my cousin had been killed down the street in the Tinley Park massacre. I was in a daze, and was near the front of the store to the left of the registeres. I had my little bag with my ipod in it, my keys, and the item. When I realized where I was, I went around to the right and saw that the line was too long, so I went back to where I got the item and put it back, and proceeded to the computer dept. They were not willing to help me there, so I left that dept. When I went to leave the store, I was detained and arrested. I do have previos theft chages from years ago, but was NOT trying to steal that thing. I was in a state of confusion! I never went outside the door with the item. PLEASE help me!!!
