Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
Blackmail or Not???
I am aware of information about a past employer that violates certain civlil laws. If exposed, the firm could be subject to significant fines and civil litigation. If I asked for money in exchange for not reporting this activity, would this be considered blackmail? As I understand it blackmail doesn't involve reporting a crime (only embarrassing information). Is this extortion? As I understand it, extortion would be threatening to commit a crime against someone if payment does not occur.
If this is not blackmail or extortion, would this activity be completely legal?

Several statutes allow for awards to individuals reporting misconduct. Please call if you would like to discuss these options.
