Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

Caught shoplifting

I got caught from shoplifting with the amount of $600 something. It was a misdemeanor act. Now I have to attend a court hearing. What will happen if I don't have a lawyer with me when I attend the hearing? What are the possible punishments and/or fines?

Re: Caught shoplifting

You may have been charged with a misdemeanor at this time, however, a retail theft involving an amount over $150 can be upgraded to a felony. If it is the possible penalties are from 1 to 3 years in prison and/or fines of up to $25,000. If left at a misdemeanor, the possibility of up to 364 days in jail remains. Either way, you should have an attorney to determine possible defenses or to minimize your penalties. You may contact our office for a free consultation.
