Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
I was caught shoplifting at Walmart. The security guard and a police officer that was already at the store took me to an office. The officer said that he would let me off with only a warning since I'm 18 and it is my first offense. He gave me a ticket and I was told that this would not go on my record I would only have to pay a fine and maybe community service. I wasn't arrested and the security guard said they wont press charges. Is this accurate because doesn't going to court mean that I can possibly be convicted and it would go on my record?

What kind of "ticket" did the security guard give you?
This is a good example of why you should not take legal advice from the police! Giving you a ticket was the same as charging you with a crime. Especially at your age, and considering the nature of the charge, it is crucial for you to avoid taking a conviction. If he gave you a warning ticket, and you do not have any court date, then you are O.K. But, if you do have a court date, you should hire an attorney to represent you.
