Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
Check forgery
My previous land lord returned our security deposit to my roommates and myself. The $1800 check was made out to my two roommates and myself, however, someone else forged my signature on the check and did not give me my share of the money. What legal actions can I take to get my money. Also, the person who did this is currently in law school, so I would like to see her punished legally (something that would stay on her record)! Thanks

Re: Check forgery
You may have three options. First, you could file a suit in small calims court naming both of your former roomates and pleading in the alternative that either one or the other of them signed your name and negotiated the check. Second, you could hire an attorney and file a circuit court case based upon the forgery, conversion of your money and possibly fraud. Third, you might be able to report this matter to the police in the county or city where it occurred, and file a conplaint for the prosecution of the offending parties. In many cases a detective will contact the other party and suddenly you will receive your money. Good luck.
