Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
if the cops charge you with one thing can they change the charge in the future?

The police will charge a defendant with a crime. The police will not change the charge in the future but the State's Attorney, after reviewing the facts of the case, can amend the complaint or add additional charges based on the facts and circumstances of the case.
An example would be the police charging someone with criminal trespass to a vehicle but then the state's attorney learns that the defendant took the car without permission and knew the car to be someone else's. At that point the state's attorney would amend the complaint to charge the defendant with possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
I agree with Mr. Bhatt.
This can and does happen.
If you or a loved one are facing criminal charges, it is best to speak with an Attorney.
