Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

Self defense or assault?

I was at a frat party and some non-frat guy was in front of me, starring me down, when suddenly I was shoved from behind. I turned around without looking and punched the shover in the face. Nothing more happened but the shover was bleeding and stayed at the party, continuing to drink a few more beers. Now I hear that later that night he had jaw surgery and wants me to pay for it. There has been no arrest or formal action that I am aware of, but my frat brother said a detective called him and asked about the incident.

Do I need a lawyer? How can the guy who shoved me allege I caused his injury? What if he was so drunk he fell or started another fight somewhere else?
