defense

do i need a lawyer if im 17 and im goin to court for a 33 dollar shoplifting conviction. like would it hurt me if i show up without an attorny ?

I would advise you to hire an attorney. It could hurt you - the dollar amount of the theft is really irrelevant. It's still a crime and attorneys are usually in a better position to help you negotiate your case. In saying that, it's not compulsory to ever hire an attorney and nobody can make you do so.

Yes, it would hurt you. Retail theft is a class A misdemeanor, with a possible 364 days in jail. Also it is a crime of dishonesty, and if not handled riht could follow you your whole life. For more information go to www.shestokas.com.

It is better to hire a lawyer, since most judges will make you hire one anyone, a lawyer can explain the case to you, prepare your defense, or mitigation to the judge, and look out for your long term interest.
