Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

Domestic Battery

I went to check on my daughters at their grandparents house after getting a phone call that my oldest daughter had been to the emergency room for a possible broken arm.I'm divorced and everything has been a constant fight with ex-wife and her Mother, and stepdad.Ex father in law is a psychotic idiot and constantly threatens and harasses me.I've filed numerous complaints with police with no results. He's been arrested several times for domestic battery against his wife. Before I went to his house to check on my girls I notified the police to meet me there.Police were slow to arrive so I went to the door and politely asked to see my daughters and I didn't want any trouble. At that point ex father n law come out of the house swinging at me and blacked my eye so I started fighting back in self defense.Fight lasted less than 5 min before I was able to get away from him.Police finally showed up and ex father n law was taken to hospital to get stitches for cut below eye. After both sides of the story was told I was arrested for domestic battery.I filed a written complaint against him at jail but he was never arrested and he started the fight.I only defended myself. How should I deal with this in court? Isn't this self defense. How do I beat it

Re: Domestic Battery

Self-defense, or use of force to defend one self, is justified when used to defend yourself against an unlawful use of force.
