Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

Early March it was found that the lock on my storage unit was "missing" and a worker at Public Storage replaced it with one of their locks. When the lock was cut my storage unit had been cleaned out. I was told that the storage units on either side of mine were also broken into. Coincidently none of the three units had insurance. I did not bother purchasing insurance because I could not afford it. I thought cameras and property surveillance would be okay but I found out after my things were stolen that there are no cameras. I had the police come out and I filed a report. The officer who handled my report said this wasn't the first time this had happened. Recently a friend of the family had her storage unit broken into at a different location. Her insurance was over, however, she was never notified about it. Coincidently, these two Public Storage's have employees that work at both locations which leads me to believe that it may be an inside job. Being that I had no insurance to begin with, is it possible to do anything about all my stuff being stolen? And if so, what steps do I have to take? Again, I lost everything. My entire apartment was in my unit, along with many valuable things that cannot be replaced such as baby pictures, etc.
