Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

Felony Conviction

In 1991 I was hanging out with the wrong crowd. I got into trouble and broke into some peoples cars. We both got caught. I was sentenced to 3 yrs. I did time for 1 yr. That was my past. I learned so much about respecting others and loving other people and not taking what did not belong to me. I have been a dad for 12 years now. Im involved with my church and i have taught small groups and parenting classes. My life is 110 percent better with God in my life. Heres my question, How long does the Felony Conviction stay on visible record? Say for example, if the Police wanted to do a background check for a house rental lease. Could they see that I was arrested 17 years ago? I know the question should be answered honestly and thats what Id like to do, but I really need this house for me and my boys. Were in an abusive environment right now, and we have to move out.

Re: Felony Conviction

Generally speaking felony convictions are part of a permanent record. They are available to the public unless they are expunged or sealed. Please see the following links for details about the process and if your case is likely to be eligible.
