Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
Felony Possession of Cannabis 30-500 grams
I'm charged with felony possesion of cannabis 30-500 grams. I have no prior criminal history. I will lose my job (which all my education has been devoted) and F.O.I.D. if convicted of this felony. I don't care about fines, probation or jailtime. I just need to keep this felony off my record. What are the odds of getting the charge reduced?

An attorney should not offer an opinion on your chances of getting the charge against you reduced based only upon the limited information you have provided. I would be very careful if I were you especially if any attorney promises you that they will get you off, or guarantees you any specific result. In many cases involving first time offenders it is possible to avoid the felony conviction and all of the resulting consequences, and I have obtained very good results for many criminal defendants under similar circumstances. So, you may in fact have some hope. What you should do is set up a meeting with an experienced criminal defense attorney and discuss all of the details confidentially with him or her. The attorney should be able to give you an informed opinion, and at the same time quote you a reasonable attorney's fee for providing representation. If you cannot afford private legal counsel, the court will allow you to apply for a public defender. If this charge is in a county relatively near to St. Louis, I may be able to help you. If not, I may be able to refer you to someone who can. You may call me for a free telephone consultation at 314-727-2822.
