Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

Me and my girlfriend found a wallet at Kmart and we took the wallet and wad going to return it to the owner it was late and we had to go and pick up our nine month old and I left the wallet on my kitchen table and forgot all about it then a week later the police came to my house and asked about it and I gave the wallet back we did not take anything out of the wallet but the police officer said it was up to a judge to say if we stole it or not is that true and can we be In trouble for this the wallet belonged to an alderman and I feel like that Is the only reason the police came cause I had my wallet stollen and the police told me if it gets turned in they would let me know

If you are charged with a crime, you definitely need to hire an attorney. It is unfortunate that you will face the expense, but, you may be able to defend the charge. No prosecutor is going to believe that you forgot about the wallet, not picking up a lost wallet is not necessarily "stealing". I've handled many criminal cases over the last 36 years.
