how long can they hold a person without allowing them to post bail.

Usually 48 hrs. However, this is a very serious
matter. The person held should have the protec-
tion of a lawyer so that he/she will not be co-
erced into making statements that they would not
make, but for being intimidated, etc. Usually,
the presence of an attorney or an attorney visit,
will convince the police officers to release the
individual or contact the assigned Assistant
State's Attorney so that formal charges can be
brought against the person being held. Will be
