Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

Identity Theft

I am being billed by a credit collection company for collection of a credit account fraudently opened in my name in 1997. I had only learned of these efforts 1 year ago and immediately filed an identity theft report with my local police station. This ''bad debt'' is on my credit report and is delaying the closing of a refinance loan on my home. It is further damaging my credit reports.

Please help me with the necessary actions to take to both remove my liability for this debt + interest , and to remove this stigma from my credit ratings.

Thank you.

Re: Identity Theft

You need to start with the credit card company - find out about their process with regards identity theft. You will have to send them a copy of the police report, etc. probably - it won't happen overnight though.
