Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

In July of this year a former friend of mine and I traded our horse riding saddles. She wished to have mine becasue it is lighter than the one she had, which allowed her to ride her aging horse without the stress of the heavier saddle. I didn't mind trading as both saddles were of a similar initial cost and I didn't use the saddle of mine she wanted much anyway, so it made little difference to me. Now, some 4+ months later, I receive an email from a sherriff informing me she has made a theft claim against me for the saddle!!! She still has the saddle I traded her, so how is it possible for her to make such a report?? It's been almost 5 months since we made that trade, but after a falling out between us this is what's happened. What can I do about this? Should I retain a lawyer? Any advice offered will be very much appreciated. Thanks so much in advance! -E

I would suggest discussing this further with an attorney, specifically any correspondence you have received from the sheriff. Second, it is important to discuss the details of the events with an attorney because while this initially looks like an unreasonable act on her part and perhaps a simple misunderstanding; it could quickly spin out of control when the sheriff and state's attorney get involved. Especially, if saddles and tack are involved, you may inadvertently find yourself facing a serious charge given the value of the property in question. It would be wise for you to have someone on your side to protect your interest. Hopefully, the matter can be resolved quickly and easily, but if it cannot it is best to have someone working with you from the start rather than trying to play catch-up later.
