Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

Juvenile Shoplifting

My son was recently arrested on a shoplifting charge with two of his friends. He had taken less than five dollars worth of merchandise, but one of the friends took over $200.00. All three were charged with felony theft. This is his first offense. My questions are, should I get an attorney to try to get the charge reduced and approximately how much would it cost. Thank you.

Re: Juvenile Shoplifting

There is no doubt that you should hire an attorney to represent your son. The cost will depend upon various factors. Usually, an attorney will require a reasonable amount to be paid up front as a retainer fee with the understanding that further fees may be required in order to fairly compensate the attorney for time and effort expended on the client's behalf. Of course, the attorney should obtain an agreement by the client or the fee payor before any additional fees are billed. In a case such as yours, you may hear quite a range of retainer fee requirements. If this case is pending in a county near the St. Louis metropolitan area, I would be able to quote you a retainer fee in the amount of $1000.00. Other attorneys may be higher or lower.
