Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

Legal Age Parent is no Longer Responsible

My son (19 yrs old) was involve in a fight with another young man. This took place in front of our apartment at 5pm. We do not know the whereabouts of this other young man. At 11pm that evening my neighbor informed me that there was damage to her car as a result of my son's fight with the other person. The neighbor saw the confrontation-why she did not call the police I do not know. I arrived from work shortly after the fight. Being upset because I do not know this other young man and my son has never been involve in this type of situation, it never occured to me that someone's property may have been effected. I suggested that the neighbor file a claim with the insurance company and call the police if need be. My husband has been out of work since March 2006. I'm barely holding it together. I don't have $1700 to cover damages. My son does not have a job. I would love to help but I'm not in a financial position to do so. What do I do. Am I responsible?

Re: Legal Age Parent is no Longer Responsible

You are not responsible for any damage that may have been caused by the fight your 19 yr old son was in. However, your son may be responsible. $1,700.00, in damages could be a felony for Criminal Damage to Property. You need to speak to a lawyer immediately.
