Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
Hi! I live in Illinois, and I am having a problem with some checks I wrote. I know, I know, but anyway. I took my pet in to have him neutered, de-flead, etc. The bill came to over $300, and I was told I could write post-dated checks for payment, but could come in every payday to pay cash, and they'd give the checks back uncashed. Well, a "series of unfortunate events" occurred and I was not able to make it in to make payment. But apparently, between the time I wrote the checks and now, my account was closed...it was open when I wrote the checks. And I had no idea the account had even been closed until the vets office told me yesterday! Now they're telling me that because I wrote the checks on a "closed account", it's a felony, and I'm going straight to jail. Is there anything I can do?

They want to be paid. Pay them. Get this behind you asap and make sure they don't report you to credit agencies. And get your bad check back. Nobody goes "straight" to jail. At the same time you are responsible for your account, and if it is closed you need to let the people know who are holding your check(s). It is your responsibility. Own it. Do the right thing.
