Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

i live in illinois and i was at a shoe store and a worker accused me of taking a $40 pair of shoes before i left the store. i admitted to her i had them and gave them back. i tried to tell her that i had the same pair of shoes in my car in a different color and i just wanted to switch them with out having to go throught the exchange process but she didnt let me explain she said she was going to call the police so i just set the shoes on the counter and left. down the road a cop pulled me over. i then told him the story i showed him the reciept for the shoes that i bought there and told him what my intentions were and that it was very stupid of me. he didnt give me any papers or tickets and didnt take me to jail but he said the store was going to try to file something aginst me but didnt know if they had enought evidence since i didnt leave the store or technically steal anything. the cop said he would call me and let me know i gave him my information and he had a camera on his car he told me to look at it to take my picture. the store siad the didnt want me back so i called them to appolpgize and explain for what it was worth but she didnt want to listen to what i had so say and didnt believe me. i am just wondering what kind of trouble i will be in and why the cop took a picture of me. i am 20 years old and i have a clean record i have never stolen anything. do you think i will have to go to court for this and do you think it will be on my record? if i do go to court do i need a public defender or a lawyer
