Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
Lost property found but not given back to owner
A person found a diamond ring on the floor where she works. She put it in her pocket. Later that day at work, she heard the person who had lost it asking around if it had been found. Although she felt guilty about it, the first person decided to keep the ring and did not inform anybody.
Is she committing a crime?

Yes. It is a crime to keep property belonging
to another. This can lead to big trouble. If
the ring is more than $350 the person could be
charged with a felony. I will be happy to answer
any additional questions that you might have.
