In my opinion your son (and his friend) definitely need attorneys to represent them. Hiring an attorney may be the best way to avoid a conviction for this offense being entered on your son's permanent criminal record. In the future, when he applies for admission to grad school, or when he applies for a scholarship, or when he applies for a loan, or when he applies for a job, there will be a question on the application, "Have you ever been convicted . . . " How do you think it will look if he has to say "yes" and then explain the charge? This is a no brainer. Hire an attorney.
