Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

Mistake with checks

I made a mistake because I'd lost my job and was living my storage facility. It's the first time and last time, but I stole a check from a part time employer and paid for an apartment. I need to set up payment arrangements with them asap or they are threatening to go to the police, kick my ass and call all of my former employers and current employer about what I did. I do not have a background and have never done this before and I made a mistake due to the pressure of possibly being homeless. I want to pay them back via payment arrangements. How shoudl i proceed
