Is it illegal to give an alias when being questioned by a police officer?

Yes. Generally, the law requires you to give a police officer your name (and possibly identification) upon reasonable request. But, you have an absolute Constitutional right not to say anything else. My advice would be not to misrepresent your identity to the police.
