Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
are parents liable for actions of adult mentally handicapped children
Are parents of mentally handicapped adult child, resident of their household and age 19, liable or responsible for the actions of their child. The child in question has stolen several hundred dollars, engaged in pedophillia, and run off with a neighbors automobile on two seperate occasions. The parents leave the child home unattended fully aware of what she is capable, hoping that she will be caught and ''learn a lesson'' and unconcerned with the harm the child stands to cause others.

Re: are parents liable for actions of adult mentally handicapped children
Hello. In my opinion, the parents could be held
liable, especially if they are legal guardians of
their child. Alot depends upon whether their
care of their child is reckless and without regard to the rights of neighbors, especially
children.
