Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
Are parents responsible for teenage drinking/drug parties that occur in their home even while they are away? Our house has a reputation within the community, as well as with the authorities, for these activities taking place there. This has been going on for a few years now and as a result our 19 year old has been jailed twice and is currently on probation. This activity continues.
Having said that, if something "very unfortunate" should occur as a result of this underage activity what consequences could we, the parents, face?
1 Answer from Attorneys
If something very unfortunate happens, I would say it is almost inevitable that the property owners will be sued, particularly if they are aware of an on-going problem. Make sure you have plenty of insurance, and then some more insurance after that, and consider finding "alternative housing arrangements" for your son.
