Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

Possession of Stolen Vehicle

I bought a car from an independent owner last year. I was never able to get the car registered because the VIN didnt show up in the system with the Dept of Transportation. I got stopped a week ago and found out the car is stolen. I cannot find the person who sold me the car and I need to know what to do to prove that I didnt steal the car because all I have is a bill of sale wit no notarierty. This is my first car purchase and I didnt know. What should I do, I have court on Dec 13th.

Re: Possession of Stolen Vehicle

Hello. This is a very serious matter. There are

many issues that need to be discussed so that

you will have the best chance possible of getting

those charges against you dropped. I suggests

that you hire a lawyer. It will be necessary to

file preliminary motions such as a motion to

quash and a motion to suppress. However, again

I do not advise that you try to represent your-

self. Will be happy to answer any additional

questions that you may have.
