Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
Pressured into writing statement, can anything be done?
Recently I was arressted and charged with retail theft, of the store I used to work for (I was the manager). I was held in the back room by my loss prevention manager and questioned about things, I had no clue what was going on. I was told if I didn't confess to anything I would be arrested and thrown in jail, being young I didn't want to go to jail. So my LP Manager continued to question me, he would use alot of loaded questions like, so you were taking 7 dollars a day from the safe? I would respond with No i was not, then he'd say so how about 125 dollas over the course of 8 weeks. Think hard, if your number matches mine we can work with you. So I blindly, under stress and emotional agony agreed to what he was saying. He then told me what to write down for my statement, and I wrote what he said word for word because I was so scared and it all seamed very surreal to me. He then left the room, came back with the paper signed by a person who was not a witness to the conversation and has no idea what was said, made me wait then the police came to take me into custody. I was not read any miranda rights while the police continued to question me. Is there any action I can take? Or did I shoot myself in the foot?

Re: Pressured into writing statement, can anything be done?
You may have two statements. One to the store personnel and one to the police. They are legally different because the police are the state. Motions to suppress statements are very fact specific. You should discuss your arrest with an experienced criminal defense lawyer.
