Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

I was recently arrested in Illinois for retail theft and posession of marijuana. I am wondering what I can do to keep this from going on my record. I am 19 and have never comitted any other crimes. I am a full time student at a private liberal arts college and am extremely concerned with the effects this will have on graduate school acceptance and job applications. I was as cooperative withthe arresting officers as possible. I also wrote a statement explaining exactly what happened, and I am going to plead guilty in court. I was also told that these convictions will not go on my record if I complete probation requirements. I am wondering if this is true.

A conviction will go on your record as well as the arrest. You should discuss your situation with a lawyer.

You should not just go to court and plead guilty of anything. Only after you hire an attorney and that attorney has negotiated a plea bargain for you should any plea be entered. In many cases we are able to negotiate a plea bargain which will avoid you taking a conviction on your record. I can not overemphasize how important it is for you to hire an attorney and avoid the conviction(s) if at all possible.
