Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
Recovery of property
In March of '04 the police took my 3 home computers and office computer because I was being investigated for satelite signal theft. The search warrant stated they could take them for a reasonable period of time. I still haven't got them back. What is considered a reasonable period of time?

Re: Recovery of property
Hello. First of all you need to consider whether
the search warrant was valid when the police arrived at your house. Second, you need to take
court action to get your computers back. Again,
whether the warrant was valid is a question that
needs to be answered. It would not be the first
time that a police officer abused his authority
and obtained a slip of paper later claiming it to
be a search warrant. The language "a reasonable
time" sounds phony. That is a good question!
What is a reasonable time and why would a judge
sign a purported search warrant with such uncertain terms as "a reasonable time." I will be happy to answer any additional questions you might have.
