sentence for attempted murder

If a person got stabbed but did not die, what is the maximum and minimum sentence that the person who did could get?

Attempt murder carries a sentence of 6 to 30 years in prison, no probation is possible. The person sentenced must do 85% of the sentence before he gets out. Perhaps the defense lawyer could get the state to reduce the charges to aggravated battery. I believe that is a class 2 felony, which carries a sentence of 3 to 5 years, but probation is possible.
