You should hire a lawyer to see if he can secure some settlement or disposition to the case that will not result in this being on your record. For example, Cook County has a theft school program where you don't have to plead guilty and simply attend a class.. The other possibility is an outright dismissal depending on the facts of your case. You may be eligible for a diversion program that keeps this off your record. In some instances when someone goes to court and the alleged victim does not appear these types of cases are dismissed. If it is your first offense you may be able to get theft school. You attend a class and then the case is dismissed.
