Shoplifting

I got arrested of shoplifting. After I got released, they said that I have to go in a court hearing. I don't have an attorney and I don't know what to do. How about the expenses?

This is a Class A misdemeanor, which means you could go to jail for up to 364 days and/or be fined up to $2500.00. You surely need an attorney for court. You may contact our office for a free consultation.

You have been charged with a Class A misdemeanor which carries up to 364 days in jail and/or a $2,500.00 fine. You need an attorney. I've been a criminal defense lawyer for 29 years. Please call for an appointment.

As you can see from the other answers posted by attorneys, you need to hire an attorney to represent you. You do not want a conviction for shoplifting on your record if it can be avoided, and you certainly do not want to go to jail or pay a substantial fine. If you can not afford an attorney, you should go to your first court date and ask the judge if you can apply for a public defender. You need to hire an attorney in the geographical area of the court in which you must appear. I practice in several Illinois counties, so you can call me to see if I can help you if you'd like.
