Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
slander
I am charged with theft/possesion of stolen property.the police are telling the news people that they believe that I am responsible for 40-50 burglaries and this is all being published in area newspapers and broadcast on surrounding television stations.I was arrested on 01/16/2003 and to this date I have not been charged with a single burglary. Can I sue the police for telling these lies? Can i sue the news sources for printing/broadcasting these lies? How can they say this stuff when its not true?

Re: slander
You say you are charged with theft and then say you are not. Talk to your attorney - you could ask the court for a gag order -
