Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

hi, im steve and i own a small company that builds watertowers and i built a watertower in southren ga, and the crew i hired to paint the watertower. ok after they finished the job they were suposed to return the equitment and trailer to the home office, well after 2 weeks of them not returning phone calls and emails i reported it stolen , ok after i did that the trailer was found at the guys house that i hired and i sent the police there to recover it and the guy i hired told the cop i still owe him money so he can keep the equitment the equitment if worth around 80,000.00 dollars , the police said they cant do nothing about, so what the hell i dont understand, can u help me????, thanks
