Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

theft, sort of

I used to work for a bar, and around 5 weeks ago i put a bottle in a garbage can and dumped it in the dumspter. The manager saw me put it in the original garbage can before i took it outside and dumped it. They accused me of theft, even tough I pick the bottle out of the dumpster and gave it back immediately. The owner contacted me a few days later and said he'd assumed I'd stolen 10 bottles so he wanted 250$ cash in a week or he would contact the police. I ignored him until this week when he said if he didnt get the money by friday he would contact the police and give them the tape, or whatever. Should I pay him, can I be in any sort of trouble here? thanks

I suggests that you continue to maintain your innocense. Telling the truth is always the best option. There is no guarantee that your former employer will not call the police if you pay. Will be happy to answer any additional questions you may have.

Do not pay him. If the tape does not show you doing anything wrong, you have no problem. This is extortion.
