Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois

First Time Offence Retail Theft

For the first time in my life I was arrested for retail theft of a product costing $199.99. I was cooperative with the security and the police. It was a serious laps in judgement and I am very sorry about it. I do not have the money for legal representation. How serious is this, and what can I do to help my case.

Re: First Time Offence Retail Theft

You may qualify to have a public defender from your county represent you in court regarding your criminal charge(s). However, seeing it is your first time offense for retail theft, and assuming you have a clear criminal background, it may be possible to negotiate a plea of supervision or conditional discharge with the prosectuors. I would advise retaining an attorney. There are many attorneys that would be willing to represent you.
