Legal Question in Criminal Law in Illinois
being wrongfully accused of internet fraud
I have been involved in an internet business for about 6 months now - selling electronics, primarily gaming systems. I got involved in this business with someone I had not known long. I processed orders via his direction, collected payments - just doing my job - and gave most of the money to him - he handled buying and shipping the merchandise ( I was paid a weekly salary of $500). I have now received emails from buyers stating they did not receive their goods - and John (my employer) is nowhere to be found. I explained the situation to the buyers, but they still say they will come after me. This morning, I saw a sherriff at the door to my building - possibly writing down the names on our mailbox (it's an apartment building with 3 floors). The orders were processed from my PC at my home - by me, but in his direction. I am now really terrified to go home because I am scared there will be a sherriff searching my home or ready to arrest me. This may all blow over, and the sherriff may have not even been there looking for me, but I am worried. I don't want to be wrongully arrested or have my home searched. Can they search my home or take my computer? I also live with my girlfriend - can they take her computer? PLEASE HELP!!

The sheriff would need a search warrant to search your house and computer. It is likely that your computer would be seized upon issuance of a warrant. Since the sheriff doesn't arrest anyone, or serve a warrant, in Chicago, that sheriff may have been there to serve a civil process. The Chicago Police or the FBI would be the agencies involved.
