Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Illinois
Is this considered discrimination
The office manager of the firm I work for has been saying some things I feel are extremely inappropriate. She told me some months ago I could not wear my hair in a ponytail and that that was not the image the firm wanted to project, and yet there are 20 other women in the firm who where ponytails all the time.
She also told me not too long ago that she feels that I'm more suited to do hospitality work and that I'm much better at that than the job I currently hold (which is that of receptionist).
She also has expressed to me that I'm not allowed to make mistakes. And that the reason I don't gain anymore responsibility in the firm is because of a phone list that had mistakes on it a year ago. I am due to get my paralegal degree in the next few months and I have spoken to her on several occasions regarding advancement, she has always put me off. Or gotten miffed at the suggestion.
In the firm that I work for all of the african americans are in menial positions such as mailroom clerks.

Re: Is this considered discrimination
If you are being treated differently because of your race, then you may have a valid claim of discrimination. Please consider contacting an attorney to discuss the details of your employment, and the manner in which employees are treated differently because of their race.
