Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Illinois

feeling violated

I have just been singled out from 20 HR reps in regards to appearance. I am now in the process of having to see a ''personal image consultant'' who is coming to my home to go through my closet and tell me what I should wear and not wear, and to see what accessories and other items I may have. If this individual feels that I am in need of certain articles, she is able to purchase one or two things in order to help me. I do not feel right about my personal life being entwined with my career. I feel violated having someone come to my home and go to the most personal room in my home and go through my clothes. I feel that I am some type of charity case. Also, I may not wear a jacket everyday, but the guys don't either. I have been told to wear my hair up and keep it straight because it looks more professional. My race is Hispanic and lord knows I was not born with straight hair, and wearing it straight does cost alot of money. is this right?

Re: feeling violated

It seems to me that you are working for a very narrow minded company, but you, as a part of their Human Resouces department should be well aware of this. They seem to have a limited view of how your department should look. On the other hand, if you have no employment contract, and are merely an employee-at-will, your employer can terminate you for any reason, or no reason. So, you will have to make your own decision as to what you are willing to do to keep your job.

Re: feeling violated

If the treatment you are experiencing can be shown to be because of your race (Hispanic) then you may have grounds to pursue an employment discrimination case. You are welcome to contact my office with further details of your employment.
