Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Illinois

Can they force me to speak only english at work,

My employer told me i can not sing or talk spanish even in my breaks. They told me that I speak perfect english. If I want to talk I must spek in english only. Is that legal. They are making my job impossible. Is there any recourse or must I quit.I refuse to not speak spanish only because my co-workers do not speak english. The owners are making every attempt for me to quit. I haven't only because its not right.

It doesn't sound right to me either. Check with your local EEOC, that is Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, office. They will advise you.

As an Illinois licensed & practicing attorney, it too does not sound right to me. Is there any reason why you need to speak Spanish at work? Is there any non-discriminatory reason why your employer would not want you to speak Spanish at work?
