He should definitely hire an attorney and avoid the conviction that he would receive if he just paid the fine. Hopefully, he will never get into any trouble ever again. But, if he happens to pick up another charge later in life, a conviction on this one will have negative consequences. Also, on job applications, school applications, loan applications, etc. he will be seeing a question as to whether he has ever been convicted of anything, and he will be much better off being able to truthfully answer "No".
