It depends what country and the judge. "The man" needs to inform the state's attorney's office and ask if they have a problem. If "the man" are talking about Canada, I doubt that anybody would object, if "the man" were to ask. If "the man" is thinking about most other countries, I think that the state's attorney would have a problem that would grow in direct proportion to the distance involved.

The main concern is whether "the man" will show up for the court date. Woe betide the person who misses their court date and was out of the country without knowledge of the court (really the state's attorney - nobody investigates unless there is a problem).
