In order to qualify for a public defender (which I thought you were appointed one) I am told my step son needs to be declared indigent (which he is) Where do we go to have this done, what is the process. The judge said get a lawyer not much help there? The arrest was in Homewood, IL (Cook County) and the arraignment? was at the Markham courthouse.

He needs to motion the issue up with the court - going toe-to-toe with the state's attorney without an attorney is a quick way to spend years in jail.
