Legal Question in Education Law in Illinois
Hello. My friend D is being deprived of an education by her parents. She was pulled out of school at the very beginning of 8th grade and since then has not recieved any form of education. Her parents refuse to home school her or put her in a new school seeing as they don't have the money. D and I were wondering if there was any way to ensure that she gets an education. She is currently 16 years old. Please can someone tell me how to help her or how she can help herself despite the wishes of her parents. Thanks.

D would have to seek out her own legal advice; you can't do it for her. But there is Illinois law that may protect her if she's less than 17 years old. But if she's not willing to seek out legal help, you can only be a friend, not an advocate as much as you may care for her. And if her parents are that way, you run the risk of stirring up trouble. Sounds like a tragedy. I wish your friend good luck.
