Legal Question in Education Law in Illinois

Tacher Union dues

I am a substitute teacher. I started a long term sub job on Oct. 16th and will be there until the end of the school year. I do not get full teacher pay, I did not sign a teacher contract since I am considered a permanent sub. Now I am being told that I must pay union dues and it will automatically be deducted from my paycheck.Tha union would not be able to help me with any legal issues that may arise. Even if I get fired the union can do nothing to secure my job. My question is can they legally deduct dues from an organization of which I do not qualify to join since I am not a teacher with a contract?

Re: Tacher Union dues

Hello. My answer is , NO!! You should not have

to pay union dues since you will not benefit from

such a membership. I suggests you complain in

writing. It will help to have an attorney with

you to make the school think twice about whether

it will retailiate once you complain. I have

heard of this situation before and it is time

that this practice be eliminated. I hope my

answer helps.
