Legal Question in Education Law in Illinois
Violation of Privacy and Use of Intimidation
If I am a university student and graduate assistant do I have a right to privacy when it comes to relationship issues; can a professor from another department, who is friends with an ex of mine (this ex was also my supervisor) get me in trouble with department heads in my department through intimidation tactics? I feel as though many of my rights have been violated. Personal issues between me and an ex, my supervisor, are now departmental business? Also, isn't there a code of ethics on a professor from another department offering information about me that was given to him by my ex? This doesn't feel right. I feel very exposed, intimidated by the power of professors, and slandered. My ex told this professor that he was having problems with me. This ex had emotionally abused me in our relationship, and now I feel attacked. He used e-mail and phone message recording (of which I believe he fabricated). I had been upset that I found out that this ex had tried to court a friend of mine shortly after we broke up. I admit that I got upset; I had a lot of built up feelings from the emotional abuse that took place in the 11 months we dated. Also, a friend of his, who was also my supervisor, treated me with indignity and slander.

Re: Violation of Privacy and Use of Intimidation
Hello. You certainly do have a right to privacy. It appears as if you may be the victim of intentional or negligent infliction of emotional distress by some of the faculty and your ex. If this is the case, you may be able to bring a lawsuit againt the faculty, your ex and the university for damages. This is very complicated and you should get a lawyer to represent you even now since you certainly have been abused and slandered. Again, you do have a right to privacy. I will be happy to discuss this further and in more detail.
