About A Character's Likeness

Hello i'm looking to start a business in Entertainment. Wich will be sending Mascot's (person's in costume) to birthday parties. The Mascots are like Shrek from the Movie (motion picture) and Dr. Zues from the book. They are to Entertain Kids at parties, so i'm asking can I use the likeness of the character with out getting in trouble?

You are renting the costumes? if so is there a requirement on renting the costume? How are you advertising the business?
