I purchased dinner gift certificates for $25 worth $50 but they had a year expiration date on them. Since I paid the $25, is it legal to have an expiration dates in the state of Illinois?

Of course it is legal. You think they have to last forever? No more than a sale has to last forever.

Actually, if the cards were issued after 01 January 2008, they cannot expire for at least five years under Illinois law. The previous attorney is misinformed. And a bit snippy.
815 ILCS 505/2SS
(b) On or after January 1, 2008, no person shall sell a gift certificate that is subject to: (1) an expiration date earlier than 5 years after the date of issuance; or (2) a post‑purchase fee.
